What Is Make.com? Visual Workflow Automation Explained

Updated October 3, 2026 · Based on our hands-on Gmail / Google Drive workflows

Make is a visual automation platform for connecting apps and moving data through multi-step workflows called scenarios. We use it on this site for Gmail attachment processing because filters, routers, filename mapping and Google Drive uploads are visible in one canvas.

Fastest way to understand Make

Build one real workflow on the Free plan, then inspect the scenario history and credit usage. That tells you more than a feature list.

What a Make workflow looks like

A scenario starts with a trigger and then passes bundles of data through modules. In our Gmail workflows, a scenario can watch email, retrieve attachments, filter for PDFs or a sender, route documents, change the uploaded filename and save the file to Google Drive.

How Make pricing works

Make uses credits. Standard module operations commonly consume credits, so a multi-module scenario can use several credits while processing one item. The useful question is not “how many PDFs equal 1,000 credits?” but “how many credits does my representative run use, including trigger checks and retries?”

Make vs other automation tools

Make is not automatically the right choice for every job. Zapier offers a more linear builder and a larger integration catalog. n8n gives more code-like control and self-hosting options. Albato and Pabbly can reduce setup friction in different ways.

Start with one workflow, not a paid plan

Use the Free plan to build the first scenario. Upgrade only when a measured limit blocks the job.
